Road Roller Safety

Safe road roller operation requires the highest attention to detail.

There are a number of courses that provide practical training in safe road roller operation.

Such courses include some basic Health and Safety at work elements as well as covering practical demonstrations of safe road roller driving techniques.

Particular thought should always be given to loading and unloading procedures when transporting road rollers to and from site.

An easily overlooked aspect of road roller safety are the daily vehicle checks that should be carried out by the operator before commencing work. These inspections are in addition to the regular service and maintenance checks which should only be carried out by suitably qualified personnel trained in road roller servicing.

Road rollers should never be operated without adequate banksmen and regard to public safety, especially when operating on the public highway.

It should go without saying that the operator should be aware of and fully understand all the controls, guages and safety features on the specific road roller to be driven.

Having checked the machine over the operator should always consider the type of ground over which the road roller will be operating and any potential obstacles seen or unseen. Special care needs to be taken on uneven ground where the risk of rolling over is a possibility.

Many accidents in which road rollers are involved occur on inclines or at unsupported edges where the risk of the vehicle overturning is greatest. Special care should be taken to assess the dangers of such ground before rolling.

At the end of the working day the operator must ensure that the road roller is left in a secure and stable position, and that it is fully shut down and completely out of service. Never leave the keys in a road roller.
