Road Roller Training

Whilst in theory anyone with a Category B Licence can drive a road roller, specialist road roller training promotes safety and efficiency.

As there is no specific test or licence requirement to drive a road roller in the UK, training is geared towards the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS).

Successful completion of a CPCS course, which involves a theory and practical test, leads to the award of the CPCS Red Trained Operators Card which is more or less a requirement on all major UK construction sites.

Road roller training will cover safety, pre-shift inspections, basic maintenance and understanding of the controls.

Road roller operator training will also include instruction in how to roll and compact, how to operate on sites with an incline and how to deal with staggers and overlaps.

Training courses for road rollers usually last for around between three and five days, are for small groups of trainees, and may be carried out either on site or at the training provider's centre.

Road roller training providers should be fully accredited with the relevant local authority.
