Road Roller Licence

Do I need a licence to drive a road roller?

A full category B Drivers Licence is required to drive a road roller in the UK.

There is no specific Road Roller Licence.

The type of road roller you can drive with a car drivers licence (category B) depends on the weight of the vehicle and the driver's age.

From the age of 17 holders of a Category B Licence can drive road rollers with an unladen weight up to 11.69 tonnes, with metal rollers. This excludes steam propelled rollers.

Only at age 21 can you drive road rollers weighing over 11.69 tonnes, including steam rollers. Furthermore you can also drive road rollers "with pneumatic, resilient or elastic tyres" (source: DVLA).

Operators must of course ensure that all drivers have the correct road roller insurance.

Licence requirements vary from country to country.
